25.01
萧峰行出十余里，见路畔有座小庙，进去在殿上倚壁小睡了两个多时辰，疲累已去，又向北。再走四十余里，来到北边要冲长台关。
After walking some ten miles, Xiao saw a small temple on the roadside. He went in, sat against the wall and took a nap. The fatigue was gone after two hours’ sleep. He continued his northern journey. Some forty miles later he reached the northern gateway city of Changtai Pass.
25.02
第一件事自是找到一家酒店，要了十斤白酒，两斤牛肉，一只肥鸡，自斟自饮。十斤酒喝完，又要了五斤，正饮间，脚步声响，真走进一个人来，正是阿紫。萧峰心道：“这小姑娘来败我酒兴。”转过了头，假装不见。
The first order of business was, of course, finding a restaurant. He ordered a big bottle of wine and plates of beef and chicken. Glass after glass, he drank by himself. Presently the entire bottle was gone and he ordered another half bottle. As he was drinking, he heard some footsteps. It was Violet (阿紫) walking in. This little girl really knew how to spoil my drinking fun, he thought. He turned his head away, pretending not to see her.
25.03
阿紫微微一笑，在他对面一张桌旁坐了下来，叫道：“店家，店家，拿酒来。”酒保走过来，笑道：“小姑娘，你也喝酒吗？”阿紫斥道“姑娘就是姑娘，为什么加上个‘小’字？我干嘛不喝酒？你先给我打十斤白酒，另外再备五斤，给侍候着，来两斤牛肉，一只肥鸡，快，快！”
Smiling slightly she sat at a table across from his. “Waiter, waiter! Get me wine,” she shouted. A waiter showed up and asked with a smile, “Little lady, you want to drink?” Violet chided, “What’s that little for? Why can’t I drink? Get me a full bottle of wine now and another half bottle later. I also want a beef plate and a chciken plate. Now get moving!”
25.04
酒保伸出了舌头，半晌缩不进去，叫道：“哎唷，我的妈呀！你这位姑娘是当真，还是说笑，你小小人儿，吃得了这许多？”一面说，一面斜眼向萧峰瞧去，心道：“人家可是冲你来啦！你喝什么，她也喝什么；你吃什么，她也吃什么。”
The flabbergasted waiter couldn’t quite close his mouth. ”Gee, young lady, are you kidding me or what? Sure you can handle all that?” He gave Xiao a sideway glance, thinking “No doubt she’s coming after you. She drinks what you drink and eats what you eat.”
25.05
一会儿酒肉送上来，酒保端了一只大海碗，放在她面前，笑道：“姑娘，我这就给你甚酒啦。”阿紫点头道：“好啊。”酒保给她满满斟了一大碗酒，心中说：“你若喝干了这碗，不醉倒在地下打滚才怪。”
Shortly the wine was brought out and the dishes served. The waiter set down a big bowl in front of her. With a smile, he asked, “Lady, let me pour the wine for you?” Violet nodded, “Sure.” He filled the bowl to the rim, thinking It’d be a miracle if you drink this and don’t drop to the floor.
25.06
阿紫双手端起酒碗，放在嘴边舐了一点，皱眉道：“好辣，好辣。这劣酒难喝得很。世上若不是有这么几个大蠢才肯喝，你们的酒又怎么卖得掉？”酒保又向萧峰斜睨了一眼，见他始终不加理睬，不觉暗暗笑好。
Violet held up the bowl with both hands and took a sip. She frowned, “It stings! How could anyone drink this inferior stuff! So you sell this only to the blockhead?” The waiter glanced at Xiao, amazed that he had totally ignored her.
25.07
阿紫撕了只鸡腿，咬了一口，道：“呸，臭的！”酒保叫屈道：“这只香喷喷的肥鸡，今儿早是还中咯咯咯的叫呢。新鲜热辣，怎地会臭？”阿紫道：“嗯，说不定是你身上臭，要不然便是你店中别客人臭。”其时雪花飘，途无旅，这酒店中就只萧峰和她两个客人。酒保怎笑道：“是我身上臭，当然是我身臭哪。姑娘，你说话留神些，可别不小心得罪了别的爷们。”
Violet tore off a drumstick and bit into it. "It smells!”she complained. The waiter was hurt and said, “How could it smell? The chicken’s so fresh that it was still crackling this morning.” Violet replied, “Well, the odor could have been from you or other customers in the store.” It was snowing and there weren’t any other travelers. There were only her and Xiao in the entire restaurant. The waiter smiled, “It’s me. Of course, it gotta be me. Lady, please! We might offend other people.”
25.08
阿紫道：“怎么啦？得罪了人家，还能一掌将我打死么？”说着举筷挟了块牛肉，咬了一口，还没咀嚼，便吐了出来，叫道：“哎唷，这牛肉酸的，这不是牛肉，是人肉。你们卖人肉，黑店哪，黑店哪！”
Violet snapped back, “So what if I offended him? What’s he going to do? strike me dead?” She picked up a slice of beef with her chopsticks and bit off a small piece. She spat it right out, crying “Goodness! The beef is sour. It isn’t beef; it’s human flesh. You wicked people! You people sell human flesh.”
25.09
酒保慌了手脚，忙道：“哎哟，姑娘，你行行好，别尽捣乱哪。这是新鲜黄牛肉，怎么说是人肉？人肉哪有这么粗的肌理？哪有这么红艳艳的颜色？”阿紫道：“好啊，你知道人肉的肌理颜色。我问你，你们店里杀过多少人？”酒保笑道：“你这位姑娘就爱开玩笑。们阳府长台关好大的市镇，我们是六十多年的老店，哪有杀人卖人肉的道理？”
The waiter was flummoxed and hurried to say, “Oh, lady, please have mercy and stop kidding around! This is fresh beef. It can’t be human flesh. Human flesh is more tender in texture and isn’t as red in color.” Violet saw an opening and took it. She said, “So how do you know so much about human flesh? How many people have you people butchered?” The waiter forced a smile and said, “I know you just like to kid around, young lady. Changhe Pass is a big town and our store has been here for over sixty years now. We just don’t do that sort of thing.”
25.10
阿紫道：“好吧，就算不是人肉，也是臭东西，只是傻瓜才吃。哎哟，我靴子在雪地里弄得这么脏。”说着从盘中抓起一大块煮得香喷喷的红烧的牛肉，便往左脚的皮靴上擦去。靴帮上本溅满了泥浆，这么一擦，半边帮上泥浆去尽，牛肉的油脂涂将上去，登时光可鉴人。
"All right, it may not be human flesh, but still it’s spoiled. Only a fool would eat this stuff,” Violet asserted. ”Gee, didn’t realize how dirty my boots are,” she noticed, and grasped a big chunk of that fine beef and started to wipe her left boot with it. In a short while, the mud-coated bootleg was clean. It even looked shiny for the fat from the beef.
25.11
酒保见她用厨房中大师父着意烹调的牛肉来擦靴子，大是心痛，站一旁，不住的唉声叹气。
The waiter knew how much care the chef had put into the preparation of the beef. He felt sick, watching Violet using it to clean her boots. He signaled his disapproval by letting out a few heavy sighs.
25.12
阿紫问道：“你叹什么气？”酒保道：“小店的牛肉，向来算持是长台镇上一绝，远近一百里内提起来，谁都要大拇指一翘，喉头咕咕咕直吞馋涎，姑娘却拿来擦皮靴，这个……这个……”阿紫瞪了他一眼，道：“这个什么？”酒保道：“似乎太委屈一点。”阿紫道：“你说委屈了我的靴子？牛肉是牛身上的，皮靴也是牛上身上来的，也不算什么委屈。喂，你们店中还有什么拿手菜肴？说些出来听听。”酒保道：“拿手小菜自然是有的，不过价钱不这么便宜。”阿紫从怀中取出一锭银子，当的一声，抛在桌上，问道：“这够了么？”
“What are you so unhappy about?” Violet demanded.
“Our braised beef is an in-house specialty, famous in and around town. It makes people’s mouth water just talking about it. And you used it to clean your boots. It’s a bit too…too…”the waiter couldn’t quite finish the sentence.
“A bit too what?” Violet gave him a cold stare.
“It seems a bit unworthy,” the waiter managed to reply.
“You mean your beef is unworthy of my boots? That’s okay. They are relatives, both coming from cows. Hey, do you have any other specialties?” she asked.
“Of course, we do. But they aren’t exactly cheap,” the waiter replied.
Violet took out a silver piece and threw it on the table. “Would this be enough?” asked she.
25.13
酒保见这锭银子足足有五两重，两整桌的酒菜也够了，忙陪笑道：“够啦，免啦，怎么不够？小店拿手的菜肴，有酒糟鲤鱼、白切羊羔、酱猪肉……”阿紫道：“很好，每样给煮三盆。”酒保道：“姑娘要尝尝滋味嘛，我瞧每样有盆也够了……”阿此沉着脸道：“我说要三盆是三盆，你管得着么？”酒保道：“是，是！”拉长了声音，叫道：“酒糟鲤鱼三盆哪！白切羊羔三盆哪…”
The waiter could see that it weighed a least five tael, enough for two full banquet tables. “Enough, enough, of course, it’s enough! We have ‘carp with wine gums’, ‘slice lamb’, ‘braised pork with soy sauce’…” with a smile he recited the courses.
“Good, I’ll have three dishes of each course,” Violet said.
“One of each should be more than enough, if you just want to sample them,” the waiter suggested.
“When I say three I mean three! What’s the matter with you?” Violet showed her displeasure.
“I am sorry. Threeee dishes of carp with wine gums, threee dishes of slice lamb…” the waiter chanted out the orders
25.14
萧峰在一旁眼旁观，知道这小姑娘明着和酒保捣蛋，实则是逗引自己捶嘴，当下偏给她来个不理睬，自顾自喝酒赏雪。
Xiao took all of this in. He knew that all of her antics were designed to draw him in and decided to ignore her. So he just watched the falling and continued his drinking.
25.15
过了一会，白切羊羔送上来了。阿紫道：“一盆留在这里，一盆送去给那位爷台，一盆放在那张桌上。那边给放上碗筷，斟上好酒。”酒保道：“还有客人来么？”阿紫瞪了他一眼，道：“你这么多嘴，小心我割你了你的舌头！”酒保伸了伸舌头，笑道：“要割我的舌头么，只怕姑娘没这本事。”
After a while, the lamb dishes were brought out. “Keep one here; send one to the gentleman over there; and put one on table over there,” Violet ordered.
“Is anyone else coming?” asked the waiter.
“You’re such a chatterbox. I might just cut off your tongue!” Violet gave him a stare.
“Cutting off my tongue? Now how are you going to do that!” the waiter said, sticking out his tongue.
25.16
酒保将羊羔送到萧峰桌上，萧峰也不说话，提筷就吃。又过一会，酒糟鲤鱼、酱猪肉等陆续送上，仍是每样三盆，一盆给萧峰，一盆给阿紫，一盆放在另一桌上。萧峰来者不拒，一一照吃。阿紫每盆只尝了一筷，便道：“臭的，灿的，只配给猪狗吃。”抓起羊羔：鲤鱼：猪肉，去擦靴子。酒保虽然心痛，却也无可奈何。
The waiter brought the lamb dish to Xiao’s table. He dug in immediately without saying a word. Another short while later, the fish course, the pork course and what not were brought out in succession. There were still three dishes of each course: one for Xiao, one for Violet and one for the other table. Xiao accepted them all and ate them all. Violet tasted each dish and cried, “Spoiled and smelly, only fit for hogs!” She again grasped mutton, fish and pork to clean her boots. The waiter watched in distress, knowing there wasn’t anything he could do about it.
